Introduction
Introduction Gravelly Hill Interchange, widely known as Spaghetti Junction, is one of the UK’s most critical motorway intersections. Connecting the M6, A38(M), and A5127, the structure handles traffic volumes and load capacities far exceeding its original 1970s design. Decades of heavy vibration, freeze-thaw cycles, and environmental exposure led to visible signs of severe structural degradation, necessitating a rapid and highly accurate condition assessment.
The Client
The principal contractor required immediate, objective data regarding the extent of the deterioration to inform an urgent structural maintenance strategy.
What Our Team Did
Our specialist technicians deployed to the interchange to conduct a comprehensive structural condition and corrosion survey. The objective was to move beyond surface-level assumptions and accurately diagnose the underlying causes of the degradation.
Operating under complex access conditions, the team mapped the extent of subsurface concrete delamination and active spalling. We specifically investigated the impact of moisture ingress on the steel reinforcement, assessing areas where chloride attack and rust expansion had severely compromised the concrete’s tensile strength and structural integrity.
The Outcome
The Outcome We delivered a detailed diagnostic report that provided total structural clarity. Rather than relying on guesswork, the asset management team received exact data detailing the location, cause, and severity of the corroded rebar and concrete voiding. This actionable intelligence allowed the authorities to safely assess load capacities and prioritise targeted, highly effective remedial works—ensuring the safety of the network while avoiding unnecessary and disruptive exploratory demolition.
